“Taking Care”

We took care,

care meaning a little dusty,

hardships of day and shoes kicked off,

as soon as we found each other.

We took care,

care meaning mud borne to kitchen tiles

after learning how earth, seeds,

and who we are can be knitted together.

We took care,

care meaning sweat retiring

to that old couch blanket,

after bowing our bodies to backyard grass.

We took care,

care meaning beard trimmings

resting on skin’s cheek,

because I led you to cotton and secret songs.

We took care,

care meaning happy,

despite the grit of it all.
